Wilbur's Story,
On April 6, 2002, Wilbur (a.k.a. Willy, WilWil, Sweetboy) became part of
our family. The wonderful rescue volunteers from ABC brought him from
Albany for us. Our adoption contact person was John Robert and he had the
last leg of Wilbur's journey from Albany to our home. The day Wilbur got
to our home, he jumped out of the back of John's Jeep and right into our
hearts.
Besides the fact that Willy is quite handsome, he is by far, the happiest
sweetest dog I have ever known. We had expected a period of adjustment
with Willy, but honestly, there just wasn't any to speak of. From the very
first moment, Wilbur made this house his home and has given his complete
love and adoration to the whole family. He truly acts like he has lived
here all of his life. His tail never stops wagging. Just the sound of his
name being said by anyone in the family sends that mighty tail to wagging.
Wilbur goes everywhere with us. He loves to be around people and is
exceptional around kids. He is the biggest hit at the Varsity baseball
games and the mascot of both our sons soccer teams. He loves to ride in
the car, lays down and goes to sleep within five minutes. As long as we
are taking him along, he doesn't care what we're doing or where we're
going. Willy is a total Velcro, a sweet adorable "choochi face".
He's even a magician, he can make 17 and 18 year old boys
smile and talk first thing in the morning with basset kisses and basset
tail wagging! Needless to say, we are head over heels in love with our
Willy!
I'm sure people will wonder how this can be all sunshine and roses with no
down side. OK, Wilbur isn't perfect, but he almost is. He has a couple of
minor bad habits, (don't we all), that are easy to handle. For instance,
he likes to drink out of the toilet. So the seat stays down. He's learning
that there is always fresh clean water in his kitchen bowl. He's a typical
"counter cruiser". So food is kept away or off of counter edges
which takes temptation out of typical basset's way. He also likes to bark
at other dogs, but this too we are working on, mostly he just barks
because he wants other dogs to know he's there and he's "the
man". A firm "NO" when he barks gets his attention, a
second firm "NO" gets him quieted down. Willy is very smart,
quick to learn and eager to please. Not to mention he came to us totally
housebroken with not one accident! We've also found there are things
we didn't know. For instance, I didn't know rawhide bones taste better
after they have been buried in the yard for a few days and those really
nice expensive Nyla bones make it outside to be buried just as fast as the
ones from the bulk department!
To make a long story short, we are thrilled with our forever basset
Wilbur. We feel that our success story is possible because of the love and
dedication of the volunteers involved with ABC Basset Hound Rescue. From
Ann Belson that answered our first contact with the organization, to Dawn
Martino who fostered our Wilbur until our home was decided on for him and
who answered COUNTLESS questions, to our adoption contact in our city and
new friend John Robert. John kept his eyes and ears open and ready for
when our "one" special basset became available. He knew from our
home check that our hearts were ready for an addition to fill the void
left after we walked our dear 14 year old Jesse to the Rainbow Bridge.
This group is top notch in our eyes. They make sure everything goes
smoothly with the adoption process as well as doing everything they
possibly can to assure a good match between basset and family. Countless
hours of volunteering, caring, loving and worrying over these wonderful
homeless hounds! We're so pleased with how things have worked out that
we're hoping, when the time is right and just the right one comes along,
to add a little sister (who knows, maybe even just the right brother) to
the family.
One thing is for sure, we don't know exactly why Wilbur came to be with
ABC Rescue or how or why someone would give up such a wonderful, sweet,
loving, happy boy, but we're really glad that they did. He was meant to be
ours, it just took until he was five for him to find his forever true home
with us. Thanks ABC! From the Andes Family....Kathy, Gary, Wade,
Dean, and most important of all, Wilbur!!! |
