First
off I would like to thank all of you for participating in ABC's First Rescue Dog
Fun Show at the 2005 WoW Waddle. We hope you had as much fun as we did at the
show. All of your hounds were just wonderful! Unfortunately we ran way over time
and were unable to have the Parade Of Rescues we had hoped to do. We have plans
of changing the format some next year to insure we don't run into this problem
again next year. However, as a thank you to all of you who submitted your hounds
stories I would like to make a special page on ABC's website where we can post
your dog's picture and story.
Thank
you, Dawn Martino

Edna
Jean Crandall loved by The Crandall Family
Edna Jean,
than Daisy May, was offered to me by a client. I'm a dog groomer. Her
previous owners bought her as a breeding dog. However, they decided they
just could not keep her because all she did was whine and pee. They were
Edna Jean's second home! However, they were willing to let her go for
$350!!! Which they told me I could easily make my money back with the
first litter. Well, I told them it was my policy to never "buy" a dog but,
I offered to trade them half off dog grooming services for their other
dog. At first they refuse but, than called me back and accepted my deal.
When we picked Edna Jean up from the family my 15 year old son said "They
said good bye to their dog forever like you would if you were just
stepping out to the store"!!! Now, Edna Jean, who named after my favorite
aunt, is a blessing everyday to our family!!!

Cassidy,
Sundance and Blizzard Ahlberk love
by Sylvia Ahlberk
It all started in April 2003 I suddenly wanted
a dog. I went on-line, checked out the shelter sites and tried to figure
out what kind of dog I wanted. Years ago when I was child I had Beagle
named Snooper. My family was crushed when she suddenly fell ill after
only 6 years. She missed her 7the birthday by 4 days. It was New Years Eve
day when Snooper went to the bridge. My Mom vowed to never have another
dog. She just couldn’t go through that pain again. So when I had such a
strong feeling to have another dog I knew I had to be sly.
I was driving home on April 28th when I missed my exit off
the Garden State Parkway. A car just wouldn't let me get over so I had to
go to the next exit. I felt... hmm maybe I will get some dinner but, was
on the wrong side of Rte 17 at that time so I took a U-turn. Than I saw
it! One of the places that I found on-line! I thought, why not stop in? It
was clean, cheery and full of cute dogs. There was a lemon Beagle but, I
like traditional tri-colored ones. As continued to check out the dogs, I
was listening to a shelter worker talk to a woman who asked the most
ridiculous questions, but I was impressed how he took the time and was
patient with her. Well I was ready to leave but decided to take one more
look around when I saw this white fluff ball dog being pushed around by
the cutest little tri-colored Beagle!!!!! We locked eyes and he sighed at
me. I said “Oh, don't look at me with that face!” And he smiled... yes
smiled. The shelter worker finished with the lady and he asked me if he
could help me.......hmmmm... “Oh yes can I see that little one.” I held
him in my arms and my heart melted. I started to talk to him...”So you
want to come home and live with me?”, he kissed me.... “You will have a
large backyard to play in and I will build you a pen”, he kissed me again.
“What will I call you if you come home with me?” “Cheyenne”, no reaction.
“Dakota”, no reaction. “Cassidy”, another KISS!!! He was mine.... But how
would I tell my mom!!! I couldn't take him home until Saturday morning, 5
days! There was time to come up with a plan. Now here is the Spooky part.
The Shelter worker had the same name as my Dad, Roman. Hmmm… maybe Dad had
made that car make me miss my turn? I would have never been down that far
on the highway. It gave both Roman and me chills. I signed all the
adoption paper right away. I came back to visit several times before the
big day arrived…
It was now Friday night I went to my bowling league but the anticipation
was killing me. I got home a midnight and told my mom. I figure it was
best to be direct with her “Mom, I am cleaning out this bedroom and I am
bringing home a dog.” She wasn’t very happy about it.
I worked all night... I finally finished at 8am and took a
shower, got dressed and went to pick Cassidy up....
There was a lady looking
at the lemon Beagle when she spotted Cassidy and said, “Oh, he's the one I
want!” I replied, “Over my dead body... he is mine!” We chatted for few
minutes. She said she wished she had seen him first because he was just
perfect! I had to agree. May 3, 2003 Cassidy came home!
Mom insisted she was not going to
take care of him. I said all I want you to do is when you walk down the
hall, look in his room and talk to him. One day I came home to find my mom
talking to Cassidy.... "I love you, I'm happy you are here" Mom was very
hard of hearing and didn’t hear me come in. Shortly after that on May 14th
Mom passed away. And than it was just Cassidy and I all alone. I don't
think I would have made it without him. So, what if I spoil him a little.
I rescued him and he rescued me too!
I didn't
like that Cassidy was home alone when I was at work. I visited at
lunchtime but felt sad when I left him. So we were on the search for
another rescue needing a home.
Sundance’s story (Blue Tick Hound)… I went on PetFinder.com and there was
a Beagle/ Lab that sounded perfect. The anticipation waiting to see him
was so exciting. The day came... on the way to Petco we went. Shea and
Cassidy seemed so perfect ... until Shea nipped Cassidy and he walked
away. Suddenly, it was over. Cassidy didn't want anything to do with
him. If you know Cassidy at all he doesn't do that. We waited a little
to see if anything would change, but in the meanwhile Cassidy was nuzzling
a unique looking puppy... the head just didn't match the body. Cassidy
made his choice, he wanted a new baby sister instead... a Blue Tick
Coonhound/Beagle, Sundance... a rescue from a W.Virginia Kill Shelter.
She takes care of Cassidy... she is either called by the name of Sunny or
Momma because she is so gentle with Cassidy. Compared of how actively
she plays with Blizzard.
Blizzard's story... a friend wanted a
companion. I was taking care of him for her for a week or two, but
suddenly her job changed and she would have to give him up. My heart
broke. Blizzard was adopted by a family but, the child developed an
allergy so he was given to a shelter. Adopted again, but developed severe
pneumonia. How did he get so sick in a short time? He was abandoned at
the vets because they didn't want to pay for the care. He was nursed back
to health and taken in by a local group. I just couldn't let him go back
into a foster home again to find a loving home. The poem "Baggage" reminds
me so much of Blizzard's story. He finally found his home with us... and
has been able to put his bags away. He is my talking comedian. He can make
you laugh.
We love to get involved with local rescue
events. It's a way to give back and give another needy dog another chance
in life.

Rupert Miller
loved by Michelle Miller I
have been rescuing bassets for 17 years now. This last one we adopted and is
a heart breaking story with a great end. His name is Rupert and we acquired
him a little over a year ago. He was at deaths door and was so bad it was a
toss up to put him to sleep. A vet that I know called me in NY to tell me
that if anyone can save this dog you can. We drove to get him and was I
shocked to see the condition of this poor dog. I paid the people for him and
left as soon as I could. They could see nothing wrong with him. 4 baths
later and I found he had white on him. He didn't know what dog food was, he
was used to eating his stool and didn't know what toys were. He was 7 months
when we got him and 1 year later and 30 lbs heavier he has made a great
recovery. Housebreaking and food aggression were the hardest thing to
correct. They had even paid $800 for him. I have the original paper work
flying him in from MO. Rupert attended that summer picnic and had a great
time. Thanks for all that you do to find these dogs homes!!!

Romeo and Jewel-iet Dolce loved by the Dolce
Family It all started when I talked
to Mark Harris about basset rescue. I signed up to be put on the waiting
list and had my home visit. Almost immediately I got a call from Tom Rodwell
telling me that they had an "owner assisted" placement. ABC was just giving
me the info and it was up to me to make the phone call and set up the
meeting. That is how Romeo came into our lives in March. Never having owned
a basset before, I wasn't sure what to expect - and it turned out that he
fit right in like he always belonged to us! He is just a big old love bug.
One basset wasn't enough. In June, I got a call about a female basset that
was with her mom (Pearl) and due to circumstances, they needed to find new
homes. I had never owned a female dog before, but once I heard her name, it
was fate that she come to us. Her name was Jewel, but we changed it a little
- it is now "Jewel-iet" and Romeo has his heart's desire. We call her Jewely
girl, Jewels, girly-girl. And Romeo is Rome, or Romo - my husband calls him
a "lumber wagon" - he is a little broad in the beam! I can't imagine our
home without them and they CANNOT be apart for more than a few minutes. I am
hoping to get Jewel-iet in touch with her mom for a reunion. Thank you ABC
for these great dogs!
