Shelby

Shelby was from a puppy mill in Missiouri and returned to ABC a year ago. The first adoptive family neglected Shelby because of her extreme fear of humans. When she was returned to ABC, her nails were almost in her pads and she had an awful smell. We discovered a major ear infection with pus draining from her ear......the source of the smell. After shots, steroids, months of antibiotics, her infection finally cleared.

For the first 3 months in foster care, Shelby laid in the corner of the yard, didn't lift her head, wag her tail, bark or interact with our dogs. If a human looked at her, she would run the other way. It has taken many months, but she now plays and runs around the back yard with our Abby, wags her tail and barks.

She is still fearful of humans and watches from a distance when we pet and love on our dogs, she whines, but won't come near.

Just 2 months ago she took a treat from our hand for the first time--we were overjoyed!!

We pet her on her terms, everyday hoping that some day she will trust enough to come up to a human to be petted.

This year, she was voted Queen of our 2011 Summer Fest! She looked just beautiful in her crown and cape!

Thank you ABC for getting our sweet and gentle Shelby out of her horrible situation and giving her another chance.

If you can't adopt or foster right now, you can still help a homeless basset in need by being a Virtual Foster Home.
