Gertie:
Gertie is a beautiful small female
basset that came to our foster family February 4, 2011. She came with a history
of untreated seizures. She is approximately 3-4 years old, but her history is
unknown, so age is a guess. Within two days she began to have grand mal seizures
and was taken to a local vet, who referred her to Animal Emergency Services in
Brighton, NY. She was placed on medications and after three days returned home
to her foster family when stabilized. She is currently taking Phenobarbital
twice a day and was seizure free for 3 weeks until she suffered a mild seizure
on March 11th that lasted 30 seconds. She experiences some side effects from the
medication such as lethargy and imbalance, but on the whole she can be treated
like a normal dog. She does not suffer from any personality problems!
Gertie is very well behaved dog. She is affectionate to children and adults;
often laying her head on the person’s chest immediately upon meeting them. She
loves to sleep in laps or near her roommates. She is as sweet as she looks in
the picture. Gertie gets along well with the two dogs she lives with. She is
learning how to give the other dogs “space” and is learning to recognize signals
that the dogs give her when they are irritable with her. Gertie is being trained
to go to the bathroom outdoors with the other dogs. If we leave her alone for
more than an hour indoors, she will most likely have an accident. Going outside
with the other dogs has proved successful and we will continue the training. She
is responsive to praise, so small treats are being offered for appropriate
behavior. Because of her recent illness, she has not had any obedience training
although she appears to be a good candidate for it. Gertie would be a wonderful
dog for anyone that may have medical background or for someone that could
recognize her medical needs when necessary. She is expected to live a long,
normal life with the help of medications.
