Sandy - 0833
Meet Sandy, a sweet, stately almost 10 year old
petite tri color female. The road to rescue for Sandy was lined with
puppies. You see, Sandy's job in her past life was to have babies. Here
"home" was a 4 x 4 outdoor wire kennel on concrete blocks. The breeder who
had Sandy is retiring and has decided to turn her dogs in to rescue. Now
Sandy has a second chance for the life she deserves. The concrete slab and
kennel she once called home will be replaced with soft dog beds and fluffy
couch pillows.
Sandy is an incredibly sweet girl who loves nothing more than a soft place
to rest an and occasional belly rub. She is good with other dogs. Because of
her life in a kennel, she will need some work on housetraining.
Thunderstorms scare her, so she will need a hand to hold her paw and help
calm her fear. Won't you consider taking her paw?

Hope - 0838
My name is Hope and I am a six year old spayed
female. I came with the name Luci. My foster mom said I needed a special
name because I am a special girl. The whole family was thinking and thinking
and then nephew Devon (11 years old) said what about Hope? My foster mom
said that's the name for me. I love my new name. I have been having a really
hard time adjusting to life outside of the puppy mill. The first few nights
at my foster home I kept my foster mom up all night wanting to go outside. I
didn't understand I was supposed to sleep inside the house with the family.
Even though the place I used to live at was not so good I sure do miss my
other basset family members. I was the mommy to several of the younger
hounds and I have looked out for them their whole life.
I have a tear on one of my ears that was never treated so it healed like
that. My foster aunt thinks it gives me character. My biggest problem is I
am afraid of just about everything. Especially people. I am just now
starting to look my foster mom in the eyes. But, if she looks back at me for
more than a few seconds I think she upset with me and I cower and walk away.
Sometimes my foster mom just sits on the floor with me and closes her eyes
and rubs me all over. I like that. My foster dad is really cool. He likes to
putter around the house and I follow him all over. My two foster girls love
me very much and try to help me too. I get along well with kids although at
first I would crouch when they walked by. I have a foster basset named Julie
and I have really bonded with her. I am starting to play basset chase out in
the back yard with her. On the 4th of July my foster family had a barbeque
and invited my daughter Annabella and her family over. I was so happy to see
her! We played and ate and napped all day. Because I was not upset when
Annabella left they are going to invite her over again sometime soon.
I have a long way to go getting use to this life outside the puppy mill. My
foster family has lots of patience with me so I am sure I will get there
eventually. Please check back for updates on me. My foster mom says she will
keep up with progress reports so you can hear how great I am doing.

Adopted Bassets
The following dogs have been
spoken for or are currently in the first 30 days with their new forever
families. |
 |
Adoption Pending - Popeye 0835
Popeye is a sweet 1-year old male. He's a sporty
basset - he loves playing fetch, wrestling with other dogs, going for walks,
and flopping out on the couch (you'll have to find another seat) after all
that. He has not been introduced to cats, but does not take interest in
chasing them when they're around for the chasing. Popeye gets along with
EVERYONE without any problems. He's still working on housebreaking and will
let out an excitement tinkle when he's let out of the crate after work. He's
getting better with that and slowly learning who's in charge on the leash!
Sound too good to be true? It's not... the downside - he's not so much into
giving kisses. If that's not a deal breaker, he's quite a catch.

Adoption Pending - Cleo 0832
Cleo is a 5-year old female; she was used as a
breeder and lived in a kennel all her life. She is getting used to living in
a house with 2 other 'Bagels' and 2 cats. They all get along great and she
loves the company.
Cleo is a very sweet and silly dog. She is a little jumpy right now, but
once she warms up to you she's very friendly. She loves to run and play. She
hasn't had any accidents in the house at all! And had her first bath
yesterday, and enjoyed it! She is a Quiet girl, She didn't bark for one
week.
Once she gets spayed she will be ready for her 'Forever' home.

Adoption Pending - Wendy 0843
My name is Wendy. I am a beautiful 14 month old
tri-color little sweetie. I am a bit shy right now and easily frightened,
but I am getting better all the time. This is my first time in a real house.
I'm trying really hard to go potty outside like the others, but I'm still
learning. I like to chew things, but my favorite things are off limits
according to Mama Karen. She bought me some things that are good to chew on
but it is so hard to resist the bad stuff. But I'm trying. I haven't learned
to share very well because of my original surroundings. It was every dog for
himself. So I do guard my food and treats and toys from the other dogs. But
I let Mama Karen take whatever she wants right out of my mouth. I love to
give kisses. And I just found this big, comfy thing they call a couch.
Before I just tried to chew on it but now that I am actually sitting on it,
I sort of like it and will try not to eat it so they let me sit on it. I
don't mind a crate, but I like it better if someone is in the room with me.
I'm still a little scared. And there are these smaller things running around
meowing and trying to hit me with their heads. Mama Karen says they are cats
and are OK, but they really scare me. I just keep my distance. So much to
learn. So much love to give.
*UPDATE*
Wendy here. I just love living in a house! It is so much nicer then the
outside! But I do go outside when I'm supposed to, or at least most of the
time. I'm really, really trying. I like playing with the other dogs. We play
tug and tag and wrestle. Sometimes we just share a lap for a little snooze.
I'm even starting to play with those meowing things. They like to play with
my tail and its kinda fun. I get lots of food to eat and I don't have to
fight for it. They just serve it up in a nice silver bowl. And treats! I
like them! But I didn't like those nasty things called fireworks. They were
very, very scary. And while I love my family, I still don't know about other
people. They still scare me but Mama Karen says she won't let anyone hurt me
so I'm trying to give them a chance. After all, I gave Mama Karen a chance
and look how well that turned out.

Adoption Pending - Lilly 0839
Hi, my name is Lilly and I am a 6yr young female,
I am also spayed and have all my shots so I am healthy. I did come from a
puppy mill so please don't hold it against me.
I am in a good foster home and trying hard to get used to being in a house.
I am very easy going and quiet. I do get a bit excited at dinner time; it's
my favorite time of the day next to sleeping. I love going for car rides and
I do very well - I kind of stay in one place. I am small for a Basset and I
weigh in at 46 pounds. I also do great while getting a bath - I don't like
it but I don't fight it either. My foster home has two greyhounds and all I
see is legs so I hope I get in a home with dogs my own height so I can see
them eye to eye. My foster mom's daughter takes me for walks and I get to
meet some of the neighbors and they tell me how beautiful and good I am. I
love the attention they give me! I really look forward to my forever home so
hurry up and fill out the application so I can show you how great I am!
*Update*
LILLY IS COMING ALONG OKAY, SHE IS STILL HAVING ACCIDENTS IN THE HOUSE
(PEE), NOT AS MANY BECAUSE I HAVE TO WALK HER TO THE DOOR EVERY TIME SHE
GETS UP FROM A NAP.
HAVE TO PUT HER IN THE CRATE (WHICH SHE HATES) ONLY WHEN I HAVE TO BE GONE
FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS AND NO ONE ELSE IS HOME. TRIED CRATING HER AT NIGHT
BUT WENT FOR THREE DAYS WITH NO SLEEP.
RIGHT NOW LILLY IS SLEEPING IN MY ROOM ON HER MAT ON THE FLOOR, I HAVE A BIG
CEILING FAN IN MY ROOM SHE SLEEPS THROUGH THE NIGHT AND IF SHE GETS UP I
KNOW IT AND TAKE HER OUTSIDE.
LILLY IS A VERY SWEET GIRL AND GETS ALONG BETTER WITH THE GREYHOUNDS. SHE
LIKES TO FOLLOW ME AROUND EVERY I LEAVE THE ROOM, CRIES WHEN SHE LOSES SIGHT
OF ME - WE SHOULD CHANGE HER NAME TO VELCRO. LILLY IS STILL A LITTLE ON THE
SHY SIDE BUT LOVES PEOPLE AND ATTENTION. I THINK SHE WILL BE GREAT IN A
QUIET HOME WITH OLDER CHILDREN AND LOVES GOING FOR WALKS. |

Adoption Pending - Sadie 0840
Hi, my name is Sadie and I’m the queen of the
Arkansas 11! I’m turning 8 next month and am the sweetest southern belle
you’ve ever met. I’m recovering from surgeries but am doing very well. My
foster dad says I’m a real cutie too. I love other dogs, cats and humans.
I’m trying to learn about going to the bathroom outside – all this inside
stuff is new to me. How about giving me a chance in your home?

Adoption Pending - Jake (Formerly Dufus) 0841
Hi! I'm Jake! My foster mom just named me that,
because I came all the way from Arkansas with the name Dufus, and it didn't
suit me at all. I am no Dufus! I personally think she should have named me
Tigger. I'm bouncy, trouncy, fun fun fun! I am 11 months old, and the
sweetest thing you ever saw. I just love to cuddle right up to you, and you
might think I'm chewing on you but I really am just grooming you. Mom says I
am all up to date on my shots and neutering (ouch! those stitches itch!),
but I still need to have a little operation for my cherry eye and then I
will be ready to go. And, she says I have learned to go potty outside really
quickly- I am so smart! It helps that I am so young (and handsome). So, I'm
sure there is someone already waiting to adopt me, but just in case, let the
adoption coordinator know if you just love me and want to take me home. Or
better yet, help me out by sponsoring my surgery, I hear the rescue sure did
spend a ton to get us all the way up here to New York! |

Adoption Pending - Rylee 0837
I am a 2 year old spade female who is currently getting used to living in a
house. I came from a puppy mill situation so certain sounds are new to me. I
am very social and love to wag my tail. I am great with kids and love for
them to give me belly rubs. I am working on my house training skills. I
would be happiest in a home with other dogs (preferably Bassets like me). More
information will be coming soon, as I settle in to my foster home.

Adoption Pending - Bella 0846
Hi there, my name is Bella. I am the baby of the
rescued Arkansas 11. I am only 4 1/2 months old - My right eye had to be
removed because I developed glaucoma and my "boss" at the puppy mill never
had it treated - and it really hurt BAD. It was so far gone and I was in so
much pain, by the time I was rescued, my eye had to be removed. Let me tell
you - I didn't deserve that!! Just look at me.
About one and a half weeks ago, just after getting rescued, I got all my
shots, got spayed and had my eye removed. I'm feeling a lot better now and
settling into my new foster home nicely.
My foster mom said you would never know that I came from a puppy mill. I'm
very frisky and absolutely adorable. I love my 2 Basset brothers too - they
just think I'm a sweetheart - well...most of the time. And I also have 2
human siblings. They too think I'm just beautiful and so much fun. Of course
I am - I'm a puppy - with attitude.

Adoption Pending - Annabella 0842
I would like to introduce you to Annabella Rose.
Annabella came to me with the no name. She was referred to as "Mystery" on
her vet records as were two other females in the Arkansas 11. It was
apparent that she had been a mom at least once in her short life of one
year. Annabella was very shy and it seemed like every noise, smell and sight
was something fearful for her. Making eye contact with her would send her
straight into a submissive position. She was unsure of coming inside the
house and to this day will stop at the door and wait to be invited in.
I think it helped that we had other dogs in the house as within a short
period of time Annabella would take her cues from them. She bonded first
with the dogs and has now come around to bonding with the people. The one
year old puppy that is now Annabella is emerging. She is learning to play
with toys and people. She is stealing shoes and eating the newspaper. She is
finally getting to be the dog she was meant to be.
I look at her as she is all snuggled up on the couch and think where she
would be right now if ABC hadn't saved her. I can't dwell on it too long or
it will make me go crazy. The fun loving puppy causing mischief in my home
was just two weeks ago an unnamed dog who's only purpose was to have as many
puppies as possible.
Annabella still has a long way to go. She is still afraid to meet new
people. The other day while walking in the park a jogger caused her to back
up and tremble. It's a big world out there and it is my mission to make
Annabella understand that for the most part it is a good place. Her only job
now is to be the dog and part of our family.
Thank you ABC for saving Annabella. Annabella promises to be a good
ambassador of ABC and the Basset Hound breed and her mom pledges to help ABC
so more bassets can be helped and find their forever families.
This picture shows Annabella taking a rest after her walk in the park with
some basset buddies and then enjoying an ice cream cone.
