December 2011

ABC Basset Hound Rescue was contacted Christmas week about a commercial breeder in Texas who was going into foreclosure and losing their property. We were asked for help taking in some of the 31 bassets who needed a home. Watch the news story from Texas.

ABC quickly went into action looking for foster homes to handle this. Our foster care director, Andrea Beabes, found 6 foster homes who were willing to take on the challenge of fostering a dog from a breeding facility.

Our basset friends at Helping Hands Basset Rescue took the 5 bassets that were coming to ABC to a local vet and had all of their shots updated, the dogs were spayed/neutered and micro-chipped.

On Friday, December 30, the 5 bassets, now named Dallas, Austin, Houston, Abilene & Amarilla headed north! JoAnn & Dennis Graffious, of Helping Hands Basset Rescue, drove the bassets to Little Rock, Arkansas where they met their next driver, Menzie Campell, from Ozark Mountain Basset Rescue. Menzie drove the bassets to Nashville, TN where they then met the ABC van and our volunteer, Bob Richardson. Bob then drove through the night making a stop in Ohio to pick up a homeless basset mix named Jolly. They again hit the road arriving in Buffalo, NY Saturday at noon.

Once here, they were greeted by a group of ABC volunteers and were able to stretch their legs before getting back in the van to go to their foster families.

These 6 bassets will be in foster care for 2-3 weeks while they are house trained and personalities assessed.
