Welcome the 2008 "There's no place like home" Waddle Information Page.
Announcing the 2008 “There’s No Place Like Home” Waddle!

Friday May 30th Pre-Waddle Party 5 PM – 9:00 PM
Saturday May 31st Waddle Day 9 AM – 6 PM

This year’s waddle will be held in the Village of Chittenango (just east of Syracuse) the birthplace of Frank Baum, the author of the Wizard of Oz. This year marks the 30th year of “Oz-Stravaganza”, the longest running Oz festival in the USA. ABC has been told that 4-5 of the original munchkins and the actress that was the fill-in for Dorothy will be in attendance. ABC will be a part of this great event when we will be waddling down the Yellow Brick Road.

ABC’s Basset Waddle plays a critical role in putting rescue efforts into the public spotlight and is our largest fund raising event of the year. So, come out and help ABC help this great breed…there will be games, prizes, shopping and of course, food! Spend an enjoyable weekend with friends and basset hounds. We will waddle rain or shine. As we will have tents and a shelter, should the weather not meet our hound’s expectations. The “World famous” Slobber Shoppe will be on hand; peddling distinct basset wares for fellow hound lovers. Last year ABC had over 200 hounds….this year ABC is looking for over 400 hounds to march down the “Yellow Brick Road” in Chittenango, NY and be a part of history…the longest running Oz-Festival in the country…30 years!

A Waddle, what’s that?

A waddle is like a walk-a-thon; only it’s the hounds, not the humans that are sponsored for pledges. Did you know the national average of pledges raised for Waddles by supporters of basset rescue is upwards of $100? 10 sponsors of $10 each quickly hits that mark. Who can you ask? There are lots of folks; family, friends, a pet sitter, a vet, a groomer, colleagues at work (remember all the Girl Scout cookies you purchased from your co-workers. Every little bit helps, and you can let people know that ABC is a 501c3 not for profit organization, donations made to ABC may be tax deductible. The best part is all the money raised goes directly back to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming homeless, abused, and unwanted hounds. And-don’t forget to check if your employer has a matching grant/donation program!

It’s a lot of fun and exciting to see hundreds and hundreds of basset hounds all in one place and participate in Waddling in the “Oz-Stravaganza” parade! However let’s not forget the reason we do this. It’s all about rescuing these wonderful bassets and being able to finance it. Since January 2001 ABC has rescued, vetted and adopted out over 450 basset hounds….all bills paid! That takes a lot of pledges and a lot of commitment from our supporters. ABC is so grateful to all of you!

We ask our basset owners to gather pledges, either as an individual or team. The waddle is approximately 10 blocks and we will provide a pooped basset wagon. We ask that you turn in all pledge sheets at the Registration tent in the park on Saturday. You must be registered to participate in the parade. If you are unable to gather pledges, we ask a donation of $25 per dog in order to participate.

New This Year!

ABC’s 2008 Waddle has moved from Grand Island, NY to the Village of Chittenango (just east of Syracuse, NY) birthplace of Frank Baum, author of the “Wizard of Oz”.

This year ABC will be apart of the “Oz-Stravaganza” Grand Parade! There will be bands, floats, munchkins and BASSETS HOUNDS!

The “Oz-Stravaganza committee is very excited to have ABC as part of in their parade. ABC will have two floats---a float for the Royal Court, King, Queen, Prince & Princess. The 2nd float will be for our older bassets and family members that are unable to walk the parade route.

The Village is looking forward to a large turn out of Bassets…..ABC has adopted over 450 since 2001…therefore; our goal is to have 400 or more Basset Hounds in the parade. So call your family, friends and co-workers that have a basset to come out this weekend to support ABC.

To have your basset in the Royal Court all you have to do is submit a letter as to why your basset should be King or Queen. The winning letter for the male will be King and the runner up will be Prince. The Queen will be the winning female and runner up will be Princess.

Rules: All winning bassets need to be at the waddle, entries must be a basset hound that was adopted through a rescue. All entries to be mailed or emailed to:

Foster Homes Recognition

At this year’s waddle ABC would like to make a special recognition to all of our Foster Homes. Our foster homes are key to our organization and very special --- when ABC gets contacted about a basset either in a shelter, abuse case or an uncertain situation, these bassets go into a foster home. The length of time varies, but in that time information is gather and passed along to the adoption coordinator so a home & family can be found for the dog.

Without these homes, ABC could not bring in dogs to get adopted. ABC is always looking for more foster homes. So, this year ABC, will have our fosters parents in bright yellow shirts with foster written on them in addition to having a tent to learn more about fostering. Our present foster parents will be available to answer any questions you might have. Anyone signing up to become a foster parent at the waddle will be given a special gift.

King & Queen

To nominate your basset hound for the Royal Court all you need to do is submit a letter as to why your basset should be King or Queen. The winning letter for the male will be King and the runner up will be Prince. The Queen will be the winning female and runner up will be Princess.

Things to Remember & What to Bring:

• Your pledge sheet & your pledge money- This will be taken at registration when you arrive. ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO TURN IN PLEDGES AND/OR Donations
• Some spending cash or your check book- to treat your hound(s), shop our vendors, buy some raffle tickets and to help raise much needed funds for ABC. We even take credit cards!
• Your official 2008 “There’s No Place Like Home” Waddle T-Shirt! Wear them to the waddle and show your support for ABC!
• This years waddle theme is the “WIZARD of OZ”. Be creative the “OZ-Stravaganza” committee wants to see a lot of bassets dressed in something “OZ”.
• A blanket or lawn chair to relax on with your family and basset(s)
• Water & bowl for your dog. There will only be a limited supply of water for the dogs provided by ABC so please bring plenty of water for your dogs.
• Please be sure to have your dog current on ALL of its vaccinations before attending the event.
• Extra “poop pick-up” bags: Please be considerate and pick up after your hound. We want to be welcomed back!
• A camera to take lots of candid pictures of your hound participating in the activities at the event. Send your digital images to webmaster@nybasset.org to be posted on our web site after the event.
• An umbrella or rain poncho just in-case it rains. Plan for the weather!
• A decorative wagon to pull your hound in during the waddle. This is not mandatory, just an idea (and an especially good one for pokey plodders!)
• Comfortable shoes for walking in the parade.
• Tie outs or x-pens – This is an on leash only event.

***Everyone is responsible for keeping the park clean***

Things to remember for the Waddle/Parade

1. Please!!!…provide your own cleanup along the way. Don’t rely on others to clean up after your dog.
2. DO NOT feed or give lots of water to your dog right before the parade.
3. If your basset needs to use the pooped wagon, please get on yourself and hold him/her instead of walking beside the wagon.
4. Those of you who will be using wagons – please watch out for others so we don’t have injuries.
5. Do not lag behind and cause huge gaps in the parade procession.

In case of warm weather….watch for signs of heat exhaustion in humans and dogs. We will have vet techs in attendance for the Saturday events.

Festivities will resume at the Waddle area at approximately 4 PM or when we get back.

Donations

ABC is a 501c3 not for profit organization. That means we are all volunteers that exist solely because of donations and support from kind people like you!! ABC is looking for donations of items that can be raffled off at our post-waddle picnic.

Gift cards from nationwide chains (Wal-Mart, Target, Applebee’s, etc.)
Dog related items (toys, leashes, biscuits, gift baskets)
Tickets to sporting events
Any basset related item
Non-dog related gift baskets

All we ask is that the items are in “new” condition. Remember, as a 501c3 organization, your donation can be tax deductible.

If you are interested in donating items to our raffles, please contact Gary Penny at gpenny@rochester.rr.com or call 585-392-0193.

Your generous donations would be appreciated on or before May 15, 2008. Thank You!
